Papers of Mary Elizabeth Wood, 1920-1996.

The bulk of the collection documents Wood's work as an administrator at Buffalo, Philadelphia, and Pittsburgh YWCAs. A personal information series contains correspondence, newspaper clippings, a periodical article, and poetry, most of which is included in her annual Christmas letter. A series on church, civic groups, and clubs documents Wood's life in church and community organizations, notably the Aurora Reading Club of Pittsburgh and the Mount Ararat Baptist Church, also in Pittsburgh. Included also in this series are papers from the Health and Welfare Planning Association and the 1977 Conference on Aging in Hershey, Pa., giving witness to Wood's concern for the elderly. The principal series on the YWCA consists of correspondence, annual reports, newspaper clippings, memorials,programs, convention and conference materials, and subject files relating to Wood's administrative career at Buffalo, Philadelphia, and Pittsburgh YWCAs and as a. consultant and volunteer for the national board of the YWCA after retirement. A final series contains photographs of Wood's personal and professional life.

Educator, social worker, and YWCA (Young Women's Christian Association) administrator. Born in Des Moines, Iowa, Mary Wood graduated from high school in 1920 and Drake University in 1924. After teaching for one year at Houston College in Texas, she became director of the youth program for the African-American branch of the Tulsa, Okla., YWCA. In 1949 she attended a Leadership Training Institute in Geneva, Switzerland and subsequently worked at YWCA branches in Denver, Newark, Philad...
